Vallombrosa
The
Vallombrosa Benedictine Abbey is located in the heart of the ancient Beech and Firs Forest, and was built in year 1038 by
San Giovanni Gualberto, member of a noble family in Florence that founded the
Vallombrosan Order of Monks. Surrounded by trees, this is a one of a kind building where the famous poet
Milton stayed during his
visit to Tuscany and
Italy. In the neighbourhood area, there are other Romanesque Churches that are definetly worth a visit, such as the Pieve (Parish Church) of Saint Agata, Pitiana and
Cascia, hosting some paintings made by
Masaccio in the 1400's.
Florence
Florence is known all over the world for its famous Monuments and Museums:
Ponte Vecchio (The Old Bridge),
The Uffizi, the
Accademia,
Palazzo Vecchio,
Palazzo Pitti with the
Boboli Garden. Originally built by Romans,
Florence flourished during the
Middleage and Renaissance period, and gave birth to famous writers and artists like
Dante, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci. Florence's history is bounded to the history of the
Medici Family, that ruled the town and that left their beautiful heritage to its citizens.
Arezzo
Recently rediscovered by worldwide tourists for being the stage for
Roberto Benigni's movie “Life id Beautiful”,
Arezzo was originally built by the
Etruscans, and became politically important as a Ghibelline opponent to the Guelph
Florence. A wealthy city,
Arezzo is famous for the production of
Gold and Silver Jewellery, a fine craftmanship that dates back to the Etruscans. Every year, the
Festival of the Saracen Joust takes place in September, and features colourful costumes, parades and traditional games like the knights' tournament.
